Megan's Picks: All you need is a little tweed

This fall I have been seeing tweed everywhere, which is wonderful because some of my favorite pieces already in my closet are tweed separates. It is rather warm fabric, making it the perfect choice this time of year. I don’t know about other places, but Portland seems to be getting pretty chilly and earlier than normal.

The sets have been the most amazing to see. There is nothing more classic Chanel to me than a beautiful tweed set. I put together my picks of my favorite tweed pieces I have seen this season, without the Chanel price tag.

3 ways to wear a plaid pencil skirt

One of my favorite closet staples is the pencil skirt. It is everything I want in a piece of clothing. Classy, modest, but also compliments curves. I found the most beautiful and comfortable pencil skirt from Eugene, Oregon local brand, Yala.

I would love this skirt for the simple fact that it is incredibly comfortable, the perfect fit, and has a lovely plaid print. There is more though! Yala uses organic material that is responsibly made. Not only does this piece feel good to wear, it provides another kind of positive feeling.

This skirt is made from a bamboo viscose and is a blended double knit. This makes it a thicker material and perfect for fall. The materials are organically grown, sewn where sourced, using low impact dyes, a small sewing floor, and Oeko-Tex 100 certified (this means it is not made from any harmful substances). Their philosophy fits so well with what I want out of a clothing company.

Below are three looks I put together with the Geneva skirt.

Sincerely,

Megan

At-home teeth whitening: does it work?

The best thing to prepare me for my day of taking on teaching 32 students is coffee or tea. Lately, I have taken to tea, which has been an absolutely lovely way to start the day! Although this warms me up in the morning and makes me feel good, there is a negative aspect that comes with coffee and tea drinking: teeth stains.

At home teeth whitening

As someone that is very busy, I have found that getting around to whitening has been trouble in the past. I have tried many different methods from store-bought whitening strips to natural remedies like vinegar, baking soda, or coconut oil. With the traditional whitening strips, I found that it was always so hard for me to keep them on. I was constantly having to readjust them and I didn’t want to do much with them on. When using natural remedies, I didn’t find much success and quite frankly, my stomach didn’t agree with many of these ways either.

I think one of the best ways to make a good impression is to show the care you take of yourself. A bright smile is one of the easiest ways to look well cared for. Luckily, I came across Smile Brilliant. I was so excited to learn that everything you need for the process is easily done at home! I have always wanted to try a professional-level whitening system, but with such a busy schedule, I don’t have time for extra trips to the dentist, just for whitening.

When my Smile Brilliant box arrived, I felt ready to take on this seemingly intimidating process because of the information provided. The process was so easy because the box comes with very detailed instructions and each container is nicely labeled. There were even tips on what to do if I messed up my first attempt at making the molds. Smile Brilliant thoughtfully includes extra mold containers just in case (and did this come in handy for me!). In all, my box included custom-fitted trays designed specially to fit my teeth, and 3 whitening & desensitizing gel syringes. The entire box was a value of $149.00.

After I did my molds, I mailed them back in the pre-stamped envelope and waited for my trays to arrive. It took about two weeks for the entire process (this included sending the molds to Smile Brilliant, the making of my trays, and getting the finished product in the mail).

Once I received my trays in the mail, I wanted to try it right away! I typically have sensitive teeth, so I was a little worried at first. One thing that really helped me was a tip I read on the How-to and FAQ page that suggested putting coconut oil along the gum line. This was such a helpful tip and it made my first session comfortable. Because the trays were molded from impressions of my teeth, they fit like a glove! I didn’t feel restricted from doing anything. It was easy to do things around the house without worrying that they would fall off.

After I whitened for about an hour, I would brush the whitening residue off with a non-whitening toothpaste. Then, I would use the desensitizing gel for 20 minutes. I found that the best time to whiten was around bedtime, this way I knew I wouldn’t need to eat anything afterward. Because I have more sensitive teeth, I found that I needed to whiten every other day.

I noticed results after just the first few sessions, and Guy noticed my pearly whites too! I am so pleased with how much whiter they appear. If you are looking for a better way to whiten your teeth, I would absolutely recommend trying Smile Brilliant.

What to wear to the theater

Going to the theater is a very special event for Guy and I. For us, the tradition started on the night of our engagement. After Guy asked me to marry him, we went off to a lovely evening at the theater. We went to see the Oregon Ballet Theatre (OBT) ballet dancers and the OBT Orchestra perform George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker to Tchaikovsky. Since then, we haven’t missed a Nutcracker and we try to go to as many shows as our pockets allow throughout the year.

As a former dancer, I have always loved the beauty and class of going to performances. As a little girl, if I wasn’t performing, I would often don tights, a fancy dress, and a certainly a bow in my hair. Even living in a laid back small town on the coast, I remember audience members dressing more formally to watch their children dance. Dressing to the theater can be a bit challenging, especially if you live in a typically casual city like Portland. When choosing what to wear to the theater, we are sending a message to the orchestra, the performers, and the production staff what we think about their hard work and performances. With this in mind, I think it is always best to choose to dress more formally.

"What you wear is how you present yourself to the world, especially today, when human contacts are so quick. Fashion is instant language." —Miuccia Prada

This does not mean that theater attire needs to be expensive! Just recently, Guy and I went to see Phantom of the Opera (which was without a doubt the most incredible performance I have ever seen) and the dress I wore, I purchased for $4.00 at a local thrift shop (check it out below). You read that right, the same price as your morning cappuccino. The shoes I wore were at least five years old. The only new item I was wearing was this beautiful Eiffel Tower Limited Edition Kate Spade bag that was a birthday gift from Guy. Most of the other outfits I have worn have varied in price, but the most expensive dress I have ever worn to the theater was around $100.

It can be done! It just takes a little more effort. Check out all of the looks I have wore to the theater since that special evening with Guy at The Nutcracker in 2015.
